Good Eye Bad Eye
The “Good Eye Bad Eye” project is a personal exploration of my cultural roots, drawing inspiration from Haetae, a Korean mythical creature known for warding off evil by distinguishing between good and bad energy. This concept unites the three contemporary jewelry pieces, symbolising protection and discernment.
Crowns are traditionally reserved for the highest-ranking royals and worn during important ceremonies. My crown, however, serves as a symbol of power and strength, evoking a sense of majesty. My name, Solbi, includes the character “bi” (왕비 妃), meaning queen and this crown reflects that identity, empowering all women. The mountains symbolizs endurance and spiritual elevation, with the patinated textures representing life’s journey—its continuous challenges, growth, and moments of peace and reflection. Wearing this crown feels like carrying a piece of Korea's serene landscapes, a reminder of peace, strength, and the timeless beauty of life’s path.
To complement the crown, the two rings feature elements of a traditional Korean pine tree and house, both adorned with windows. Korean pine trees are known for their longevity and resilience, surviving even the harshest weather conditions. The house symbolizes shelter and warmth, with open windows inviting introspection and connection to one’s roots.
These pieces, when combined, form a cohesive story that mirrors the storytelling aspect of Korean traditional folk painting, Minhwa, transforming folk art into a personal exploration of shelter, growth, and the power we hold within us.
